In the small village of Chimayo, New Mexico, there is a small, dark sanctuary that each year draws thousands of visitors. The dirt found there is believed to have special healing powers, and many traverse the country hoping to be cured of whatever disease is plaguing them. After visiting the sanctuary, many head to the Rancho de Chimayo, where some of the best authentic Southwestern food is served. From there, they head to the corner of U.S. 84/285 and Route 503, where the high road begins. This famous roadway runs northeast from Sante Fe, toward Penasco, and then on to Taos. This amazingly beautiful drive is a journey that is hard to describe in words; as you leave behind the tourists that abound in Chimayo, the road lies before you, an open book, ready to be written.

Hit the Slopes in Taos

When you mention the city, Taos, New Mexico, deserts and tumbleweeds come to mind. It's certainly not the first place most would think of when planning a ski vacation. Surprisingly, however, situated only 15 miles northeast of Taos, nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is the Village of Taos Ski Valley.

The Village is home to the Taos Ski Valley Ski Resort boasting a top rated ski school, expert ski runs, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. They host numerous special events such as snowmobile tours, the Taos Winter Wine Festival, and the Salomon Extreme Freeride Championship.

If you need a break from the snow, a short drive down the canyon to the Rio Grande Gorge provides year round hiking, biking and horseback riding. The spring and summer bring rafting, kayaking and fly fishing to the Rio Grande.

The economy in the Village of Taos Ski Valley is mainly supported by tourism. Many of the area's local businesses close during the slow seasons, typical of a resort community. The following population numbers illustrate the number of part time and seasonal residents.

TAOS - Land of Entrapment
By Maja Gartmann

For years, I have heard about Taos. Having skied a variety of resorts both within and outside the United States, I couldn't wait to get there and I was more than pleased to see for myself that Taos lived up to its reputation of being one of the world's most unique and picturesque ski resorts. Taos Ski Valley is one of the gems of North American skiing, with a stunning mountain setting in Northern New Mexico. Taos Ski Valley blends the warm ambiance of a small European-style village with the traditions and customs of the local Hispanic and Pueblo Indian cultures.

Although it has a reputation as an experts-only destination, Taos is an ideal choice for any skier, having loads of beginner and intermediate runs, and the nation's best ski school with the worlds' best ski instructors: I whished I would have known this before, just one day skiing with Doug DeCoursey brought me more than years of skiing. I couldn't believe that just after one hour of instruction I skied down the moguls like an expert! One thing it does not offer is snowboards...
